On the coast of Nordland county, just a half-hour drive north of Bodø, you will find the beautiful peninsula Kjerringøy. It has an idyllic, coastal-alpine landscape famous around the world from films based on Knut Hamsun’s novels.
Most people still associate the peninsula with Kjerringøy Handelssted (Trading Post), which enjoyed its golden age in the 1800s. Today, the intact trading post is one of the most important buildings from this period in the whole of Norway.
Kjerringøy Trading Post is a unique example of coastal heritage set in magnificent scenery. It consists of 15 old buildings retaining many of their original contents.
I was lucky to take some pictures just before sundown, magical light setting!
I stayed at Kjerringøy Brygge Hotel which is located just a stone’s throw from Kjerringøy Trading Post, so it was just a short walk to get there.
The next day a had a guided tour in the mainhouse. Very interesting visit both to see the interior of the mainhouse but also the other buildings.
A great way to get an insight into what life was like in the past.
The interior of the main house. The wallpaer is handprinted and made in Paris.
Heimbrygga – was the warehouse most important building in the trading post. It was used for storage of empty barrels, salt, sails, and ropes for boats and ships, and maritime goods like herring, stockfish, clipfish, cod liver and salted roe
