We arrived at O.R.Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg, on New Year’s Eve! I traveled with my daughter ( then 5 1/2 years), my mother and stepfather. We were all very excited about how this trip would turn out.

At the airport we picked up our rental car and – 2 1/2 months later – we delivered it in Cape Town. The route we traveled became like this:

It is easy to travel around in South Africa with a car. The roads are mostly good, especially the highways. We have never experienced any problems on our roundtrips, neither in South Africa or other countries for that matter.
I can really recommend to explore the country driving around and you are free to stop and visit any place you want!

On this trip we did not book any accommodation in advance, except for our 4 nights stay in the Kruger National Park. If you want to stay overnight in this park I will recommend you book several months before you travel.
I guess it is wise to book in advance if it some special hotels or lodges you want to stay at. At least if it is holiday season for the South African as well. We did have some problems some places which were very popular. And now it is much easier to search for accommodation with all the different travel websites. You can compare prices and even earn some money in this way.
